Dr. David Samadi Explains How Processed Foods Are Cancer-Friendly

Researcher says a link with bad eating habits has been found in about 30 percent of cancer cases. In fact, in a recent report, Dr. David Samadi, Chairman of Urology at Lenox Hill Hospital pointed out “Why food can be your best cancer-fighting friend.”

This data, compiled by the World Fund for Cancer Research is quite relevant, especially considering that a third of the cancer cases could come down to the foods we consume. Dr. Samadi continuously spotlights how food impacts diseases. Doctors worldwide agree that reducing the number of calories, reducing the consumption of meat and increasing that of fruit and vegetables diminishes the risk of cancer.

We Are What We Eat

Ultra-processed or highly processed foods, which in some developed countries, like the United States, account for more than 50% of a person’s food source. These are often referred to as “industrial foods,” and are rich in sugars, fats, salt, refined flours, high fructose corn syrup, and while not necessarily always very high in calories, these processed foods contain lots of additives, preservatives, and dyes. “Convenience is the reason why we consume processed foods,” and “the culture of food has changed,” says Dr. David Samadi. With the processing of foods today, is it really surprising there is a relationship between diets and the development of some cancers?

Consider treated or processed meats, such as sausages or hot dogs. These are treated with preservatives to improve their shelf life or taste. Nitrite and nitrate, which are used for the production of sausages and hot dogs, are especially dangerous.

And the excessive and regular consumption of refined flour is associated with the increase in cases of breast cancer. This food also has a high glycemic index which increases blood sugar levels, promoting the development of cancer cells.

Maintaining a healthy diet and normal weight is one of the keys to diminishing the risks of cancer says Dr. Samadi. It is advisable to base your diet on plant-based and unrefined foods. Many foods have a protective action against cancer like broccoli, cabbage, green beans, pumpkin, green leafy vegetables, potatoes, and legumes.

Dr. Samadi is internationally acclaimed for his contributions to the urologic medical field. Besides being a visiting doctor at numerous institutions overseas, he successfully modified prostate surgery, inventing the SMART technique. This resulted in quicker recovery time for patients, and a higher success rate. At present, Dr. Samadi is the Chief of Robotic Surgery and Chairman of Urology at Lenox Hill Hospital.
