George Soros Charities Targeted in Russian Book Burn

 

The Burning

A total of 53 books linked to the Open Society charities of George Soros were found burned by the Vorkuta Mining and Economic College in northern Russia, reports a CNBC article. The books related to the Renewal of Humanitarian Education program, and they were confiscated before being burned. In addition, 427 books were seized for shredding as a result of a search effort across college libraries in Russia’s northern republic of Komi. Russian news reports cited an intergovernmental letter in which a presidential envoy claimed that the Open Society charities created a perverted perception of history and held directives that go against Russian ideology.

The Open Society Charities

George Soros founded the Open Society Foundations and the Open Society Institute initially to assist countries in the transition from communism. The charities currently are active in projects that build democracy across the globe. The charities run on the principles of governmental accountability and individual rights, according to the Open Society Foundations. Over the course of their existence, the charities have helped fund university for thousands of individuals, including young people from marginalized groups and refugees of war. The charities consist of a large network of foundations and partners in over 100 countries. George Soros is a famous hedge fund billionaire who also supports other independent organizations, including the Institute for New Economic Thinking and the European Council on Foreign Relations.

Tension Between George Soros and The Russian State

In July 2015, tension began between George Soros and Russia when the Russian government added his charities to a list of pro-democracy organizations that engage in soft aggression against Russia. At that time, the government also hinted around about a potential banning of the Open Society charities.

Banning of The Open Society Charities

In November 2015, Russia officially banned the George Soros charities, reports a CNBC article. According to a translated press statement, the Russian government stated the Open Society Foundations and the Open Society Institute posed a threat to the constitutional system and state security. Russia’s General Prosecutor’s Office reported the charities were put on a list of foreign non-governmental organizations that engage in undesirable behavior according to the Russian State.
