In 2010, the United States Supreme Court made a decision that led to a legal recognition of corporations as people. This decision led to the build-up of massive amounts of money in the United States politics. Many dark money corporations rose to support various candidates and used them to pursue their own political and business interests. This left the Americans out in the cold yet they are the people suffering due to the decisions of a few rich people.

Thanks to public education on the effect of the increasing monies in the politics, more and more Americans are joining hands in an attempt to reverse the Citizens United decision. March 2015 was the beginning of a new era for the United States. A new political action committee called End Citizens United was established. The main aim of this committee was to pressure the congress into approving reforms for that will eradicate the dark money that is tainting American politics. The committee was officially launched in August 2015.

End Citizens United is operating with three objectives. The first is to prioritize the matter of campaign finance making it a national priority. One way to achieve this is through creating awareness which the committee is doing through membership and advertising their endorsed candidates. This brings us to the second objective which is fostering leaders who are supporters of the campaign finance reforms. These are mostly Democratic candidates seeing that Republicans have been pulling down any attempts to achieve these reforms. The final objective is to use grassroots membership to show the power of the Americans in regards to the people.

The members are supporting the committee through making donations and also participating in the committee’s activity. One of the major activities that End Citizens United has engaged in is the seeking of signatures in support of their petition to Congress. This petition requests congress to pass the campaign finance reforms. Over 325, 000 members had signed this petition before the official launch. To increase these signatures, End Citizens United teamed up with the “Ready for Clinton” campaign which would bring together two great teams.

During 2015, End Citizens United endorsed 11 democratic leaders. Among those endorsed were Wisconsin County’s former senator Russ Feingold and Colorado’s senator Michael Bennet. During the 2016 election, the group supported their candidates through various advertisement channels. This has all been possible due to the donations that their members and other supporters are making towards their course. During its official launched the group had 136,000 donations amounting to over $2 million. Its aim was to raise about $25 million. The group also realized the lack of transparency in campaign finance and thus is leading by example. Its statements were presented to the Federal Election Commission and are open to their donors and other interested members of the society.
